The Monday after the 5km test: rest day! Eight consecutive days of swimming is worthy of a break haha. So I met up with my two best friends from my village Baimbridge (it’s actually Baambrugge but we call it Baimbridge for fun sometimes). We had lunch together and chatted about our week, very gezellig! 🙂
I also had to try to persuade some people to help me with the lottery/auction; I sent Johan from SwimGym an email asking if he would be willing to offer something on behalf of SwimGym. He was happy to help and likes the fact that I train at his pool for my Channel Swim. So one personal training from an Olympic swimmer (as we Dutchies would say) in the pocket! My dad also managed to get us a golf clinic! 🙂
I also went to a meditation in the evening which wasn’t too great but the after effects were nice. You see I had to swim the next day and to change it up a bit I went cycling to and from the pool (1 hour there, 1 hour back) so I wouldn’t have to swim as much. Everything felt very in the moment which was quite lovely! 🙂 I swam my own program, of 6km, and I don’t quite remember what anymore.. Everything kind of blurs together haha.
Wednesday I slept in, I guess I kind of needed it. Then my regular Wednesday appointments (psychologist, piano lessons) and again, I cycled to Amsterdam. In the afternoon I went to café/restaurant de Punt to ask the owner Mark if he wanted to help me too. He offered a card to get dinner for free at his restaurant along with a sponsoring if I got a cap made with ‘de Punt’ on it. He also gave the numbers of a couple of people to call. Very nice!
The rest of the week was basically chilling, doing fun stuff swimming was just something I did in between..
Thursday I spent time with Toine, sitting in the grass and enjoying the sun! 🙂 Then I had to swim: 50x100m medley (25m butterfly, 25m backstroke, 25m breaststroke and 25m front stroke). It was quite a lot of fun to do because there’s a lot of variety but also a lot of repetition. I thought so much butterfly would be heavy but it wasn’t that bad! Then off to work till about 11pm so that was also doable but altogether quite tiresome..
The next day I woke up quite late. I was so tired.. I actually went to bed again haha. But eventually I went swimming, my muscles aching from the day before. 3km down the Angstel (tiny river through Baimbridge) and my mom walked alongside me. 🙂 It’s funny because a lot of people ask my mom what I’m up to, what I’m training for; they all seem to be pretty curious. When I passed the restaurant some people even clapped! Apparently they were impressed I was swimming without wetsuit, but honestly, the water was pretty warm. Even children were already playing in the water.
In the evening I went to a party! It’s been so long and it was great to see my friends from school again. I was kind of afraid that I had lost my social skills because I only regularly hang out with three people but I had so many good conversations and it’s lovely to hear what other people are up to. And they were also interested in how I was doing with swimming and how I was doing in general. I did go easy because I had to work early the next morning but I had a great time catching up! 🙂
Saturday I had to work and afterwards I went to a concert of La Pegatina, a Spanish party music band. The music they play is so happy and energetic. All I did was dance and join moshpits and I have never been to a concert so intense before. It was amazing! And afterwards we got to take a photo with the singer and the gitarist! 🙂
The next day I went sailing with my friends. It’s lovely to relax on a boat with food and sun and fun! Then I went swimming again: 80x50m with a t-shirt on. That was incredibly repetitive… But I had something to look forward to: I went to a ballet show with my family. It was awesome: the fairy tales of Grimm modernised with a combination of hip hop and ballet. It doesn’t sound to great on paper maybe but they did an excellent job of combining those very different dance styles and I was deeply impressed.
So I had a really really fun weekend with not a lot of sleep haha.. Worth it though! I haven’t had a party weekend like this in ages and I get a little jealous when people go out or go to parties each weekend. What I’m doing is pretty special of course but I’d also like to just go crazy sometimes. I didn’t exactly go crazy but I had a great time and break from swimming. 🙂
I am a nineteen-year-old girl from Baambrugge, a tiny village near Amsterdam, with big ambitions. I like to set big goals for myself, I like to explore my own boundaries and see if I can expand them.
